I hear some noises in my attic. What animal could I have in my attic?

Many wild animals enter into attics because they are dark and relatively warm. Attics provide heat and safety - two out of the three things that wild animals need to survive (the other being nutrition). Moreover, most residential buildings are located near nutrition sources such as garbage bins for households and restaurants as well as ravines with creeks. So animals that den in an attic space have access to all three things that they need to survive.

Attics are also the darkest and quietest parts of a building. Nocturnal animals, in particular, benefit from the darkness and quietness of an attic - they can spend most of the day sleeping. Outside of a home's attic, in an urban environment, an animal can locate a few other suitable places to den.

When the animal youngs are born in spring and early summer months, they, too, benefit from all of the above. Also, attics provide an unmatching level of protection from predators.  We know it sounds disturbing, but a new-born raccoon or squirrel is an attractive food staple to an omnivorous wild animal on a hunting expedition. In our line of work, we regularly see animal skeletons, large and small, left behind after predators dined on the carcass. Attics save animals from precisely this.

A professional attic and roof inspection is the only reliable way of finding out what uninvited guests you may be sharing your house with. Our technicians will check your roof and attic space using specialized tools to determine which animals are living in your attic and what damage they have been causing. Once we have identified the source of the attic noise, we will develop a plan to evict the nuisance.

The attic space is such a priced good among different animals that in some (not so rare) cases, several different species will share the space. Not only is it possible for squirrels, racccoons, and other birds or mammals to live in the same attic, this kind of cohabitation makes a lot of sense. First of all, the entry point is already there for another animal to utilize. Secondly, most of these animals  cross paths peacefully in the urban space and are quite familiar with one another.

This raises the complexity of pest control in attic spaces. For sure, there are some jobs that a technician with a limited skill set or toolkit can complete relatively well. However,  many jobs  require high levels of experience, expertise, and expensive specialized equipments to be completed.  That's why homeowners should do your research carefully and hire a company with a proven track record in the wildlife removal industry. The little extra a reputable business quotes over a neighbourhood handyman goes toward training and equipping the technicians with the proper tools that allow a proper assessment and safe and timely completion of the more complex jobs.
