Mice are among the most damaging and persistent pests that confront homeowners in Markham, Richmond Hill, and Vaughan.

What makes mice a particularly dangerous pest is their breeding patterns. Mice are mammals and reproduce by giving birth in a way similar to other mammals. However, a crucial difference is that mice grow very quickly.

The young mice are born after a three-week gestation period and become adults within a few weeks. A female mouse reaches sexual maturity in mere five weeks. One female mouse can give birth to over fifty mice in the course of several months. Once we do the math, it is not hard to guess how mice can grow inside our homes.  it is theoretically possible for a single mouse that lands in your house to produce a colony consisting of around thousand mice in six to eight months.

Of course, what will determine the growth rate of a mouse population inside your home is not just the birth rate but a closely related factor - the availability of a consistent and abundant food supply.  Of course, the latter depends on the cleanliness of a house. If a home is reasonably clean, mice are unlikely to grow past a certain level. That certain level, nontheless, can include hundreds of mice.

So, what do homeowners in Markham, Richmond Hill, or Vaughan need to do to avoid the exponential growth of mice in their homes?

Different breeds of mice and rats such as deer mice, field mice, roof rats and sewer rats can invade and pillage our living spaces when they are hungry. Exposed food leftovers invite rodents to a property and damages and defects along the exterior perimeter of a house provide them with an easy access into the building. Once mice enter through the exterior walls, they present a serious challenge to the homeowners.

In the fight against mice and rats, Integrated Pest Management protocols centre on two important physical interventions besides the use of chemical extermination methods. A successful control plan in response to a medium and medium-high mouse or rat infestation will require that these three components work in tandem.

First of all, all foodstuffs should be kept in closed containers inaccessible to mice. Garbage containers should be sealed and mouse-proof. Food leftovers have to be cleaned regularly. Leaving organic waste accessible to mice will help mice unleash their full breeding and growth potential. Since messy environments are seen as the ideal living space for mice, you should try to keep your belongings and cabinets organized. Household clutter often provides a welcoming habitat for mice and rats.

Regular maintenance of exterior walls, doors, windows, and other building components forming the exterior of your house is at least as important as keeping the interior clean and organized. Rodent-proof construction materials have to be used when fixing the damaged parts of the building exterior that you suspect may act as rodent entry points.

Inside the house, check for possible areas such as the basement, garage, kitchen, attic by frequently checking for mouse signs such as mouse droppings, rat urine, rat noise.

Cats, the natural enemies of mice, are an excellent tool to keep mice out of your home. Therefore, adopting a cat will be very helpful in keeping mice out of the house.

If you suspect a mouse or rat has entered your house, you can invite a professional and licensed exterminator who has access to among other things to professional rodenticides that offer tens of times greater potency  compared to over-the-counter options. A trained and licensed exterminator will combine physical and chemical control methods to solve your mouse or rat problem in Vaughan, Richmond Hill, or Markham as quickly and safely as possible.
